The Art of Hosting: How to Cook for a Large Group in a Luxury Self-Catering Farmhouse

There is nothing quite like the magic of gathering your favourite people under one roof. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone birthday, hosting a long-overdue family reunion, or just escaping for a weekend with your closest friends, getting everyone together is incredibly special.

However, we understand the thought of feeding a large group of people in an unfamiliar kitchen can be a little daunting. Where does all the food go? Will there be enough wine glasses? Who is stuck doing the washing up?

At Wressle Grange, we’ve designed our farmhouse to ensure that hosting feels less like a chore and more like a joy! With a bit of clever planning and the right space, you can effortlessly dish up unforgettable meals while still being the life of the party. Here is your ultimate guide to hosting a crowd, stress-free.

Equipped for every occasion

The secret to a relaxed host? A kitchen that does the heavy lifting for you. When you stay at Wressle Grange, you aren’t just getting a kitchen; you’re getting a fully equipped, professional-grade setup designed for large-scale entertaining.

At the heart of our kitchen is the magnificent Rangemaster cooker. With plenty of oven space and hob burners, you can have a slow roast ticking away on one side while roasting sides on the other.

We’ve provided a Magimix to fly through your food prep, so you don’t need to spend hours chopping, and there is a microwave for any dishes that just need a warm-through or those late-night leftovers.

And for the dreaded washing up… you’ll find two dishwashers at the Farmhouse (yes, you read that right!). With two dishwashers ready to go, there will be no mountains of dirty plates cluttering your beautiful counters, and absolutely no arguing over whose turn it is to dry up. We also have a washing machine on hand for any quick linen refreshes.

The kitchen includes a large, floor-to-ceiling fridge and a separate under-counter freezer, providing ample space to keep your ingredients fresh. To help you host with ease, we also include a wine cooler and an ice bucket. You’ll find all the crockery, cookware, and utensils you could need, with items duplicated to ensure there are at least 28 plates, dishes, mugs, and more available for your use. Finally, because every celebration deserves proper glassware, we have provided plenty of elegant champagne flutes and cocktail glasses ready for that welcome toast.

Keep the menu simple

When cooking for a large group, the golden rule is to avoid individual portion cooking. Instead, lean into family-style sharing platters that look abundant and taste incredible.

For a crowd-pleasing menu, here are our top tips:

The starter: Keep it simple with pre-prepared or cold options that can be ready ahead of time. Think a large charcuterie board with figs, cheeses and cured meats, or a self-serve option, such as baked Camemberts with a selection of breads and dips.

The main: For the full farmhouse experience, utilise the Rangemaster for slow cooking. Consider a crowd-pleasing mushroom wellington or a tender shoulder of local lamb. If cooking on the hob is more your style, think one-pot meals like curry or risotto.

The sides: Sharing platters will always be popular, and for good reason! We recommend roasting Mediterranean vegetables tossed with fresh herbs, or how about a selection of salads or potatoes? Prep these the afternoon before. When dinner time rolls around, all you have to do is pour yourself a drink and pop everything in the oven.

The dessert: Tray bakes are the way to go here. You can’t go wrong with a classic apple crumble. Serve in a large dish with the option of custard, or ice cream and let the compliments roll in!

Dine al fresco

If the weather is on your side, why not take the party outdoors? The farmhouse features stunning dining spaces that let you make the most of the countryside views.

Fire up the BBQ for a relaxed afternoon lunch, and as the evening cools down, gather everyone around the fire pit. It’s the absolute perfect spot for cracking open some bubbles or roasting a few marshmallows.

Bring in the professionals

You’re on holiday, too! If you want to celebrate a special occasion without lifting a finger, we highly recommend bringing in some outside talent. We’ve had some incredible chefs cook at the farmhouse recently, and our guests rave about them:

By Molly: If you’re looking for something elegant and utterly delicious, Molly is exceptional. She recently catered a flawless Sunday lunch for a family celebrating a 70th birthday here, and it was a massive hit.

Jeabs Thai Buffet: For a vibrant and flavourful feast, Jeab’s Thai Buffet is fantastic. They also recently looked after a 70th birthday group at Wressle Grange, bringing amazing aromas and a wonderful, sharing-style dining experience right to the farmhouse table.

We would be happy to arrange the catering for you, just let us know when you book.

Work up an appetite with padel!

We have two fantastic covered padel courts on site, which is the perfect social activity for a large group.

You can easily book individual courts one week ahead using the Playtomic app. However, if your group wants to take over both courts together for a proper tournament, we can reserve them for you further in advance. To make the admin worth it for everyone, we just ask for a minimum booking of 2 hours for both courts (which we will invoice to you directly).

It’s the perfect way to get the whole party playing, laughing, and working up an appetite for your next meal!
